A Canadian man living in the UK has taken to TikTok to share his first experience of a classic British dish, pie and mash, after being uninspired by one aspect of his plate.

Matt Giffen (@mattgiffenn), who regularly shares snippets of his life in Britain on the social media platform, decided to try out a traditional meal in South East London. "As a Canadian living in the UK, the concept of pie and mash blows my mind," he said in a video. "Today we're going to find out what all the hype is about and try some for the first time." He visited Goddard's at Greenwich, London - a family-run business since 1890 that prides itself on its traditional pie, mash and liquor dishes.Matt was curious about the 'liquor' served with each dish and asked staff if it contained alcohol, admitting he was feeling "a bit hungover".

After being reassured there was indeed no alcohol in the liquor, he ordered a traditional pie and mash, opting for extra gravy.

As he tucked into the dish, he shared his thoughts with his 255,000 followers. "This looks unreal," he said, trying the mash first.
