The Government is facing pressure to increase the generosity of benefits thresholds as thousands of DWP recipients have been unexpectedly landed with bills averaging £4,000.
Pressure is growing for the Government to act after it emerged that around 134,800 individuals receiving Carer's Allowance are in debt to the DWP due to overpayments.
A recent report by Carers UK surveying claimants found that debts ranged from £150 to £20,000, with the average overpayment sitting at £4,000.
Most of the overpayments occurred when claimants exceeded the earnings threshold that qualifies them for the allowance, prompting Carers UK to highlight a widespread misunderstanding of the rules among carers.
