Dane Partridge, an Idaho father and U.S. Army veteran, died this week while "fighting for freedom in Ukraine," his family announced.  His father, Dennis Partridge, wrote on Facebook on Saturday that his son was in a coma after being critically injured by a Russian tank blast.  Dane Partridge died while fighting in Ukraine when he was struck by a Russian tank round, his family said.  (Facebook/Honoring Dane Partridge) Partridge was being treated at Kyiv military hospital and was taken off life support on Tuesday, his family announced.  "He was a fine soldier who fought with valor and bravery on the battlefield," his family wrote on Facebook.

A Florida man is charged with kidnapping after he stole a truck with two young children inside, authorities said Monday.  Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy Jonathan Pazmino Alvarez was flagged down in Tampa Monday evening by a man who said his truck had just been stolen with his two children – ages 4 and 8 – inside.  Bodycam footage showing the arrest of Kevin Smith (Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office) Deputy Alvarez pursued the allegedly stolen 2011 white Chevrolet Silverado and conducted a traffic stop "within just a few minutes," the sheriff’s deputy said in a press release.  The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as 37-year-old Kevin Smith. A video of his arrest shows Smith appearing hesitant to get out of the truck, fearing that the arresting deputy would supposedly punch him.The children can be heard telling the deputy that Smith is not their father.  A mugshot of Kevin Smith.

A man accused of twice tossing a dog over a bridge said he was instructed to do by witches, according to police.  Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement Officers responded to a call Monday, October 3, 2022, of someone tossing a dog from a bridge over water located on Highway 11 in the Fingerville area of Spartanburg County.  A mugshot of Shannon Lee Cantrell.  (Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement) A witness told officers that a man was tossing a dog off and over the bridge. California authorities have arrested two brothers in connection with the kidnappings and murders of four family members in Merced. The Merced County Sheriff's Office on Friday announced the arrest of Alberto Salgado, the brother of suspect Jesus Manuel Salgado, who was taken into police custody earlier this week in critical condition after trying to take his own life. Jesus Manuel Salgado is suspected of kidnapping and murdering 8-month-old Aroohi Dheri; her mother, Jasleen Kaur; her father, Jasdeep Singh; and her uncle, Amandeep Singh.

The suspect who allegedly kidnapped and killed a Merced, California family had once worked for the family's business and had a longstanding feud with them before committing "pure evil", a sheriff said Thursday. The bodies of each of the four family members, including an 8-month-old child, were found in an almond orchard in a remote area of Dos Palos on Wednesday.The family – whose trucking business was located 30 miles south in Merced – had been missing since Monday morning. 8-month-old Aroohi Dher was found with no visible signs of trauma and an autopsy will be preformed, according to Merced County Sheriff Vernon Warnke.

A Las Vegas man accused of falsely claiming to be a Harvard Business School graduate and combat veteran to defraud dozens of investors out of millions of dollars was arrested in San Diego on Tuesday evening, the FBI announced.  Justin Costello, 42, was indicted on 25 counts of wire fraud and securities fraud last week for the years-long scheme, in which he allegedly orchestrated a pump-and-dump over social media and used his investors' money to pay for his own wedding.  "Mr. Costello allegedly told many tall tales to convince victims to invest millions of dollars – money he then used for his own benefit," Nick Brown, U.S.

The remains of a woman who was murdered 18 years ago were finally identified this week using genetic genealogy, a cutting-edge field of DNA science.  The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office originally found the remains in March 2008 and a coroner determined that the woman died by homicide sometime in the fall of 2004.  Law enforcement reviewed hundreds of missing persons reports, distributed photographs of her clothing and jewelry to the media, and created a composite drawing of what she may have looked like, but the case went cold for years.  Shannon Vielguth was identified by law enforcement as the woman whose remains were found in 2008 in Sacramento.  (Sacramento County Sheriff's Office) In 2021, investigators reopened the case using genetic genealogy and were able to identify the woman as Shannon Vielguth by comparing her remains to the DNA of a close family member.  Vielguth, who was 35 years old at the time of her disappearance, had been a transient for about six months before she was murdered, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.  "Based on law enforcement records, Vielguth was most likely in Reno, NV and Sacramento in October 2004, which coincides with the time she was most likely killed," the sheriff's office said.  Scientist pipetting a DNA sample into a petri dish with a DNA profile in the background.
