BTS are heading to the White House to address anti-Asian hate crimes with US president Joe Biden following a surge of the crimes over the past several years.
The Korean pop heroes – made up of Jungkook, V, J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, RM and Suga – will attend a meeting with Biden on next Tuesday as part of Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. In a statement, the White House said: ‘President Biden has previously spoken about his commitment to combating the surge of anti-Asian hate crimes and signed into law the Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act in May 2021 to provide law enforcement with resources to identify, investigate, and report hate crimes and ensure that hate crimes information is more accessible to AA and NHPI communities.’The Butter hitmakers will discuss inclusion and representation and how they can use their platform to spread awareness and bring attention to the cause.
Additional details about their special meeting will be released in due course. The White House meeting comes after the band condemned widespread anti-Asian racism following a surge of violence in the US.‘We stand against racial discrimination,’ the group said. ‘We condemn violence.
You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together.’The band also shared their experiences of discrimination, revealing they have ‘endured expletives without reason and were mocked for the way we look’.‘These experiences were enough to make us feel powerless and chip away our self-esteem. … What is happening right now cannot be dissociated from our identity as Asians.’BTS recently won big at the Billboard Music Awards, officially becoming the most awarded group in history.
