Broxburn Athletic’s inconsistent campaign continued as they fell to a late 2-1 defeat away to Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale at the weekend. The visitors had taken the lead midway through the first half following a bright start by both sides when Liam Gray curled a free-kick beyond Ruairidh Adams on 25 minutes.Their lead lasted just 11 minutes, though, as slack defending allowed Michael Deland to beat a couple of tackles and jink into the penalty box before rolling the ball across the face of goal for Errol Douglas to tap home.Athletic enjoyed the better of the play after the break but were unable to find a way to retake the lead. And they were punished for that five minutes from time as substitute Niall Kemp latched on to a Douglas through ball before prodding into the net beyond the onrushing Shaun Donoghue.Broxburn’s afternoon became even more frustrating two minutes later as goalscorer Gray received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away –although there was some debate as to whether or not the whistle had actually been blown before he booted the ball.Chris Townsley’s men threw everything at their hosts in a bid to get something from the game but fell short, while Donoghue pulled off a great save to tip a Louis Signorini strike over the bar to keep the deficit down to a single goal. And the gaffer admitted he wasn’t overly surprised how the game panned out, commenting: “It was frustrating but honestly that’s kind of how we’ve been playing of late so it wasn’t overly surprising.“We’ve been playing well but not great and then getting hit by a sucker punch and that’s what has happened again.“We had plenty of chances and if we’d taken a couple it could have been a different game.
