Britney Spears‘ generation-defining hits are gracing Broadway in the new musical Once Upon a One More Time, and it turns out that she had a lot to do with that.
The 41-year-old “Toxic” pop star shouted out the show on opening night last week. However, fans have been wondering exactly how involved she was with the development of the project, which blends her bops with classic fairytales and feminism to weave an enchanting story. Hunter Arnold, one of the show’s producers, revealed that Britney was quite involved with some key parts of the new musical. Read more about what Britney Spears had to do with Once Upon a One More Time… Speaking with Variety, Hunter gave Britney credit for the show’s development. “It was actually Britney who approached us and said, ‘We’d like to have a show based on my music, and specifically not a bio-musical,’” he explained. “The original idea came from ideas brought forth by her: She loves fairytales, princesses, storybooks.” It took some work to get the show to where it is today, but Britney was involved throughout: “We took a couple of passes at it — we didn’t get it right instantly.
Then we did a workshop after we got the current-ish version together and she came to see it and give thoughts on it.” Hunter added that Britney gave the team something that they really needed – creative license. “Britney and her team gave us pretty liberal ability to shift lyrics here and there, to make sure things didn’t feel clunky, but purposeful,” he said. “You don’t want to change too much because this is music that everyone on Earth loves; it’s a half art, half science to make sure everything fits where it is.” If you missed it, Britney recently addressed if she actually plans to retire.
