Manchester City midfielder Rodri has won the Ballon d'Or after an incredible year. The Spaniard claimed the honour in a glitzy award ceremony in Paris, finishing ahead of favourite Vinicius Jr.
The Brazilian had been expected to pip Rodri to the honour after helping Real Madrid win the Champions League and the disappointment was palpable with Madrid opting to boycott the ceremony.
But that shouldn’t detract from Rodri’s success. The 28-year-old suffered a season-ending injury last month and won’t play again until next term, but that wasn’t enough to stop him from claiming football’s top individual honour. He then went to the European Championships with Spain and played a key role in helping his country lift the title, defeating England in the final.
