Large parts of the UK will join London and parts of the South East in Tier 4 from Boxing Day, the Mirror understands. The rate at which coronavirus is spreading has increased and is understood have created the pressure on ministers to impose Tier 4 lockdowns on more parts of England.
Fears over crowds at Boxing Day sales and a second variant strain originally from South Africa which is spreading fast are also factors which spooked Ministers.
