Body found in search for Scots sailor missing from Faslane base

A body has been found in the search for a sailor missing from Faslane Navy base. Joshua Gayton, 21, was last seen in Helensburgh in the early hours of April 16.

Police said a body was found in the water off Helensburgh last night. Formal identification is yet to take place but a police spokesperson said the family of Joshua Gayton had been informed.

There are no apparent suspicious circumstances. The young sailor was reported missing after concerns were raised when he didn't show up for work at the nearby Faslane Navy base.A major search by land, sea and air' was launched involving Police Scotland, members of the Royal Navy and Ministry of Defence police.

Local residents had also been asked to check outbuildings and sheds. Detectives previously told how they had combed through CCTV around the area and were looking to speak to a member of the public who was spotted speaking to Josh at 12.25am outside Riva restaurant on West Clyde Street.Officers were also looking to trace the drivers of two vehicles, a white mini and blue van, which they say could have passed Josh as he was walking towards a footpath on East Clyde Street between 12.15am and 12.46am - when he was last spotted near to Lomond Street, walking alone away from the town centre.His disappearance at the time was considered "unusual" and "of urgent concern".
