Billy Connolly has admitted that he made “ridiculous” diva-like demands when on tour. The comedy legend told how he was not an easy person to be around and would insist that even the most basic tasks were carried out for him.Connolly said his road manager had to wake him up in the morning by prodding him with a broom because he was prone to lashing out violently in his sleep. His roadie also had to pack all his clothes and bring room service to him at hotels because he didn’t want waiters to see inside his room. The 80-year-old, who is suffering from Parkinson’s disease, also confessed he refused to speak to anybody directly on the phone and would leave it to his assistants. He said: “I’ve been supported by great people during all the years of my touring.
I mainly toured with Jamie, my roadie, and Malcolm, my sound man. We hired people in each town to operate the spotlights, as well as ‘humpers’ who erected my backdrop.“Jamie was in charge of this crew and he took care of my instruments.
He also woke me in the morning, packed for me, fed me, sorted out my problems, and generally acted like a rock ’n’ roll version of Mary Poppins.“He used to order stuff for my room and bring it up himself instead of the room service guys.
He hated that. He would complain to everyone, ‘It’s f***ing ridiculous. I’m doing a waiter’s job’. He was right.“For a grown man like me, that was ridiculous, but at the time I just didn’t want the waiters to see inside my room.
