You know how it goes by now. Even the official Liverpool website, on the 31st anniversary of his passing in 2012, reported Bill Shankly's famous words in the manner in which they are usually seen.

They are words often seen on posters, prints, tea towels, mugs and anything else you can slap a Liverpool logo on and that will be eagerly snapped up by fans.

But then at times like this when football is rightly taking a back seat to a deadly serious issue that is gripping the world, the words can take on a fairly hollow meaning.

How many times in the past few weeks have you seen them referred to with the preface 'Sorry Bill, but...' as they are held up as an example of an attitude we can't afford to have right now?
