Big boost for Dewars Centre as Perth venue is selected for European Curling Championships action

A treasured facility in Perth has received a shot in the arm after being selected to host European Curling Championships action later this year.It was announced this week that the Dewars Centre will welcome some of the continent’s finest curlers from Saturday, November 18, until Saturday, November 25.The Fair City venue has been chosen to stage the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships B-Division.Dewars comprises of an eight-sheet ice rink, as well as an eight-lane indoor bowling hall.It opened in 1990 and has hosted multiple major curling events, including Scottish Championships, European Championships and World Junior Championships.In addition, it is the home of the Perth Masters competition – held in January each year – which attracts top curling teams from around the world.Earlier this year it was revealed that both the Dewars Centre and neighbouring Perth Leisure Pool were under threat of closure due to soaring costs.That shock news arrived as Live Active Leisure (LAL) wrestled with “the most significant financial challenges it has ever faced” in over 50 years.The facilities were, however, saved for now and being selected to play host to a European Championship event again shows off Dewars Centre’s prowess as a big-hitter in curling circles.Debbie Scott, Dewars Centre senior facilities manager, said: “Live Active Leisure and Dewars Centre are delighted to be working with David Hay and the Perth Curling 1988 committee and Perth Masters committee to bring the European Curling Championships B-Division 2023 to Perth in November.”The event not only provides a boost for the Dewars Centre, but for the wider Perth economy – with travelling players set to stay, eat and make use of the city’s offering.Debbie added:
