A woman who was bullied at school for the colour of her skin has been crowned Miss Manchester 2024. Vanessa Tendo Naddamba moved to Greater Manchester from Uganda when she was just nine-years-old with her mum and six siblings.
The 24-year-old, who lives in Droylsden, settled into UK life well and enjoyed mixing with other pupils at her primary school. It made me reinforce my self-identity even more.” Vanessa was placed into the bottom sets for all her classes with ‘struggling students’ who needed extra support.
Knowing she belonged in the higher classes, Vanessa says it was hinted to her that she was there because of her background and where she had come from. “I did not really understand the significance of this until I got older,” Vanessa added. “Did it offend me at the time?
