Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is calling for people throughout Scotland to help shape the next strategy for Scotland’s historic environment.A public consultation is open for everyone to have their say in what the Scottish historic environment sector should focus on over the next few years.Scotland’s historic environment represents a vital part of the country’s economy, generating £117 million through tourism alone in 2021-22.

It also supports employment, the development of skills, and contributes to a number of agendas from climate change through to areas including supporting the retrofit of the existing historic building stock.

It also provides well-being benefits, outreach and educational opportunities.In a recent survey by HES, 87% of people said Scotland’s historic environment is important to them, but many were divided on what it actually means to them.It found that Scots were split on whether the ‘historic environment’ refers to tourist attractions such as castles and abbeys, traditional skills and crafts, or oral expressions including language and stories.“In truth,” said Adam Jackson, Head of Strategy and Policy at HES, “The historic environment is all of these.

It encompasses a number of aspects of our daily lives, from the traditional skills on which a large part of Scotland was built, to the structures of our iconic tourist attractions, to the streets we live and work in.
