BBC radio legend Steve Wright "died of a broken heart", according to a friend of his.The world was shocked when it was announced on Tuesday, 13 February, that Steve had died suddenly, aged 69.

Steve's friend of 40 years, celebrity publicist Gary Farrow, blamed Steve's death on a "broken heart" after his prized Radio 2 afternoon show was axed after 24 years on-air.

Gary said that Steve was left "devastated" at the news of the show's cancellation, telling The Sun: “Steve lived for that show, he absolutely loved it - and the listeners loved him.

My view is that he died from a broken heart.” OK! has contacted the BBC for comment.The presenter's family released a heartfelt statement which read: "It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright. "In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father Richard. "Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK's most enduring and popular radio personalities. "As we all grieve, the family requests privacy at this immensely difficult time." BBC director general Tim Davie said he was "heartbroken" to hear the tragic news as he shared a statement.
