Veteran BBC Radio presenter Garry Richardson is set to leave the Today programme this autumn after an impressive 33-year tenure, the broadcaster has confirmed.
Garry, whose voice has been synonymous with sports news on the show, will sign off for the final time on September 9. This date holds special significance as it marks 50 years since he first joined the BBC as a junior researcher in 1974, later transitioning to local radio and then joining the Today programme in 1981.
He also fronted the influential Sportsweek programme on BBC Radio 5 Live every Sunday morning for two decades, according to reports in the Mirror, until its last broadcast in September 2019.Reflecting on his career, Garry expressed: "I have had the most wonderful time working for the BBC alongside my heroes from sport and showbusiness.
I'll still be broadcasting from time to time, the only difference will be I won't be setting my alarm for 2.45am and that's a lovely thought." BBC's director-general Tim Davie paid tribute to Richardson, calling him a "legendary presenter" and praising his contributions: "So many of us have woken up to him bringing the latest sporting news for over four decades.
