BBC Gavin and Stacey star says 'we couldn't' as she admits major appearance change hidden in finale return

Gavin and Stacey star Laura Aikman has revealed the lengths she went to in order to keep her return to the show a secret. She shocked viewers when she appeared in the final episode as Neil 'Smithy' Smith's birde Sonia.

The 39-year-old actress - who first took on the role of Sonia during the 2019 Christmas special - has now revealed she couldn't even go shopping for her character's wedding dress to keep her surprise appearance in the last-ever episode of the BBC One sitcome from fans.

Taking to Instagram, Laura shared a picture of the dress she wore at Sonia’s and James Corden's character Smithy's ill-fated wedding and wrote: "We couldn’t go wedding dress shopping (because of the secrecy), so this was from Vinted, (it probably belonged to someone who watched the show!).

Shout out to our costume designer #ShanJames who had to alter it massively as 48 hrs before we shot the wedding it didn’t fit." She went on to reveal another major change, confessing: "Our formidable make up designer #marcuswhitney found me this amazing wig, yes IT’S A WIG.
