BBC expert warns of ‘singles tax’ costing £11,000 more on bills each year

A money expert joined the panel on BBC’s Morning Live on Wednesday to discuss the added cost living alone forces onto unsuspecting taxpayers.

Having recently opted to move into her own place by herself, the topic came close to home for finance expert Iona Bain. She explained there’s two reasons for the “single’s tax”.

Understandably the first of which is simply not having a second person, and second income, to shoulder the burden of bills like groceries and rent.

However, the second cause is a bit more subtle. Iona shared: “The tax system and the wider consumer market are mainly geared towards couples and families.
