New peer Baroness Sue Hayman dressed for change when she joined the House of Lords by choosing fake fur robes for the ceremony.
Backing the Mirror’s Fur-Free Britain campaign, which calls for a ban on sales, she said the cause was close to her heart and tradition must not block change.
The former Shadow Environment Secretary and Labour MP took her seat on Monday, supported by Baronesses Smith of Basildon and Jones of Whitchurch – who also both requested to wear robes lined with fake fur.
But only one was available, so the two supporting peers refused to wear a robe rather than the real fur ones offered. Baroness Hayman said: “This is an issue very close to my heart.
