Carey Mulligan was incorrectly announced as the winner of the supporting actress award at the EE BAFTAs after a translation gaffe while deaf actor Troy Kotsur was presenting. The winner was first announced as Carey for She Said before Troy's translator made a correction and Kerry Condon was given the award for The Banshees Of Inisherin. The awkward moment was not aired by the BBC, who televised Sunday's ceremony slightly later.
After her win was announced, Kerry said: “Thank you Martin [McDonagh] for this part, and thank you for all the parts you gave me throughout my career.
You make me so proud to be an Irish woman.” She also thanked the “amazing cast” and her family as well as her horses and dogs.
Event host Richard E. Grant joked later that he had a defibrillator for Carey. A similar mistake happened at the 2017 Oscars where Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty wrongly announced La La Land as the winner for Best Picture, instead of Moonlight.
