Ayr United produce Diamond display with victory at Airdrie

The on loan Partick striker added to a first half opener from Logan Chalmers before a United were forced to withstand a late Airdrie rally to secure the points.Ayr had made three changes from the side beaten by Raith last week with Jay Senga in for a first start in midfield, while Mark McKenzie and George Stanger also returned to the starting line-up.

Senga pounced on a slack pass from Airdrie sub Kanayo Megwa and sent Jamie Murphy down the left - and his teasing cross was slammed home on the volley by Logan Chalmers.United could easily have added to their tally as the first half wore on with McKenzie shooting straight at Josh Rae when clean through on goal, before Chalmers saw an effort tipped over the bar on the stroke of half time.But Ayr didn't have to wait long after half time to extend their lead as Dowds trapped a short corner from Roy Syla before firing a powerful finish beyond Rae.Airdrie were almost right back in it when a Murray Aitken cross was met by Calum Gallagher at the backpost but he sent the effort over the top when it looked easier to score.
