Brodie Young is living the American dream– which has led to a first GB call-up and aspirations of becoming a full-time professional athlete.Young, 20, from Chryston, is in the first year of a four-year scholarship at the University of New Mexico, and several good results Stateside earned him a Great Britain and Northern Ireland vest at the European Team Championships in Silesia, Poland, last month.Airdrie Harriers runner Brodie is hoping for much more of that, as he dreams big with the Paris 2024 Olympics just around the corner.For now, he is on a trip back to Scotland during the summer, ahead of the European Under-23 Championships in Finland from July 13-16, and Young is loving life.
He told the Advertiser : “I was the fourth-fastest Scot at 400m a couple of months ago which is pretty good. “It’s not really something I expected this season to be honest.“It was kind of where I was aiming for, but I didn’t know if I would reach it this season.“It was out in Clovis, California, because I’m running out in America now and I’m really enjoying it.“It’s something that I wanted, I was just looking for a change.“I had been looking into scholarships since 2020, so when I eventually got offered one, it was something that I was really wanting to do.“Because this year has gone so well for me, I just want to keep pursuing it now, and do another few years out there.“It’s completely different, even just things like the weather, because it’s a lot warmer over there.“At first I had to adapt to that a lot, and altitude as well, trying to adapt your breathing whilst training.“It was a lot to deal with at the start, but having done a full year there now, I’ve managed to get used to it, and it has worked out well.”That resulted in Brodie
