European bronze medal caps fine season for Airdrie athlete

Airdrie Harriers athlete Brodie Young is considering a well-earned break and ending the season on a high, after helping Great Britain and Northern Ireland to bronze at the European Under-23 Championships in Finland.The 20-year-old from Chryston helped Ethan Brown, Samuel Reardon and Edward Faulds to third in the 4x400 final, in a time of 3.04:12, and reckons he will probably call it a day on this season, before heading back to his scholarship at the University of New Mexico.Young said: “I’m very happy.

It was very competitive, a lot of great athletes there, so the fact we managed to walk away with bronze was really good.“As I was getting towards the end of last season the legs were getting pretty tired, so the fact I was still able to go out there and come away with a bronze was pretty special.“Especially with me being in America, it’s travelling most weekends there and having to come back to the UK to travel across Europe – it has been quite a lot.“It has been a good season for the general progress – I’ve managed to almost take a second off my PB compared to last year, so I’ve been really happy with the way this year has gone.“I’m kind of used to it, because I’ve now had experience of a couple of European competitions, but when you are going into a competition at under-23, the level is really high, so it can be quite stressful.”Young is looking for a rest before preparing for next season and hopes to step up his progress.He said: “Most likely that will be the end of my season.
