All eyes are on the Moon tonight as the second full Moon of 2025 rises and illuminates the night sky. As the "Snow Moon" shines brightly, skywatchers will be able to see its massive lunar craters, caused by asteroids, meteoroids, or comets smashing into the Moon's surface.
The Moon is no stranger to being struck by huge lumps of space rock. In fact, new research has shown that, nearly four billion years ago, asteroids carved out two Grand Canyon-sized craters on the far side of the Moon in less than 10 minutes.
Now, scientists warn a space rock, named asteroid 2024 YR4, could smash into the lunar surface and leave a new crater on the near side of the Moon.
NASA announced it will be using its most powerful space telescope to study the "city killer" space rock after it was discovered the asteroid is on a potential collision course with Earth.
