Whether it’s hiding a tampon up your sleeve and running to the toilet in the hope that no one notices, or referring to menstruation as your “time of the month” rather than what it actually is, the stigma surrounding periods is something that rears its head every single day.
In fact, according to research by ActionAid, more than one in three people who have periods in the UK have experienced some form of period shaming.
And one area of discussion surrounding this shame refers to the language associated with menstruation related products, especially the use of the phrase ‘feminine hygiene’.
Given the stigma that surrounds periods, many people view the term as adding to the idea that periods are unhygienic and something to be ashamed of.
