Armed police flooded a busy shopping street after a man thought to be armed with a knife was seen smashing windows and 'behaving erratically'.
Police closed the road and advised residents to stay indoors following the incident in Broughton, Salford, at 4.30pm on Monday.
The man then entered a terraced house on Leicester Road and threatened to harm himself. Following a negotiation with specialist police officers he was detained a short time later and taken to hospital to be assessed.
Police have described it as an isolated incident and say there is no threat to the wider public. Pictures from the scene show a terraced house with its ground and first floor windows smashed.
