A much-loved grandfather died after falling asleep with a lit cigarette at his tower block flat in Rochdale, an inquest has heard.
Nigel Phillip Green, 57 - known as ‘Nidge’ - suffered severe smoke inhalation and managed to make it out of the bedroom where the fire started.
But a serious leg injury which affected his mobility may have meant he struggled to leave the burning building. He was found collapsed in the hallway by firefighters and was rushed to hospital where he died two days later, on September 10, 2019, with his family by his side.
