Anthony Hopkins opens up on 'getting smashed and blacking out' before quitting drink

Sir Anthony Hopkins has opened up on his battle with alcoholism and says Alcoholics Anonymous saved him. The Oscar-winning film legend perviously admitted he was "very difficult to work with" because of his battle against the bottle.

But when he blacked out in 1975, he decided he needed to change his life forever. After waking up in a hotel room in Arizona with no idea how he got there, he knew he had to ask for help – and the movie great hasn't touched a drop since.

The 82-year-old totally gave up alcohol after he nearly "drank himself to death". He told the Sunday Times Magazine he went to went to an AA meeting after the eye-opening night of heavy drinking and hasn't looked back since.
