Ancoats' new affordable flats are in one of its oldest buildings - we took a look inside

The newly restored former Ancoats Hospital has been transformed into apartments and officially opened. The building, which had stood derelict in Ancoats for more than 30 years, came close to being demolished in 2011.

News of the proposed destruction sparked a backlash from conservationists and activists who formed the Ancoats Dispensary Trust.

A battle ensued to save the building, and in 2021, Manchester City Council alongside developer Great Places, committed to redeveloping the remains of the Grade II listed building into modern flats.

Much of the interior had deteriorated to such an extent that it was deemed not saveable. However, the redevelopment aimed to retain as much of the original façade as possible, while replacing the unsafe parts of the structure with a new modern building.
