Ana de Armas wasn’t expecting Blonde‘s NC-17 rating. The MPA’s official rating was announced back in March, with director Andrew Dominik sharing a few months later that he was completely surprised by the decision.
With the film is nearing its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Ana spoke with L’Officiel (via Uproxx) about the project and echoed Andrew‘s sentiments, noting that she felt other movies were “way more explicit.” Click inside to read more… “I didn’t understand why that happened,” the 34-year-old actress said of the rating. “I can tell you a number of shows or movies that are way more explicit with a lot more sexual content than Blonde.” She continued, “But to tell this story it is important to show all these moments in Marilyn’s life that made her end up the way that she did.
It needed to be explained. Everyone [in the cast] knew we had to go to uncomfortable places. I wasn’t the only one.” Based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde stars Ana as Marilyn Monroe, charting her rise to stardom and exploring her romantic entanglements.
