Carrie Underwood performed at Donald Trump‘s inauguration back in January and it was a controversial moment for the singer, who lost some fans in the process.

Now, the showrunner of American Idol is opening up about Carrie‘s decision to perform at the inauguration amid her new role as a judge on the show. Keep reading to find out more… “That was her decision,” showrunner Megan Michaels Wolflick told TheWrap. “Katy Perry, who was a judge on our show, sang at the last inauguration as well, so isn’t that great that two American Idol judges sang at the last two inaugurations?” she added. Jennifer Lopez, another former Idol judge, performed at the 2021 inauguration as well.

During Carrie‘s performance of “America the Beautiful,” she went a capella due to technical difficulties. “She held her own, and she remained cool, calm and collected, and I think a lot of that has to do with Idol and all of her live experience, starting at a young age, being on live television for Idol,” Megan said of the performance.
