AppleTV+  thriller “The Crowded Room,” and the show is a great advertisement for how he shouldn’t quit his day job as Spiderman. Now streaming, “The Crowded Room” is a miniseries created by Akiva Goldsman, set in  the summer of 1979 in New York City. The plot follows troubled young man Danny (Holland) after he’s arrested for open firing a gun near Rockefeller Center.

To convey Nash’s subjective experience of his condition, “A Beautiful Mind” pulled a bait-and-switch. Early in the film, we meet Nash’s college roommate, who becomes his lifelong friend; later, it’s revealed the roommate was a figment of Nash’s imagination. At the time, the twist was effective enough to earn Goldsman an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The limited series “The Crowded Room,” created by Goldsman for Apple TV+, attempts the same trick to greatly diminished returns. A simple Wikipedia search shows that “The Crowded Room” was inspired by Billy Milligan, the first defendant acquitted by invoking a case of dissociative identity disorder in the late 1970s. But ahead of the show’s release, critics were asked not to disclose the fractured mental state of Danny Sullivan, the Milligan analog played with doe-eyed naiveté of Tom Holland. This puzzled me, given the eminently Googleable nature of the premise. Then I started watching.

With the ongoing WGA writers’ strike, it’s safe to assume plenty of upcoming films will see lengthy delays. And in the case of Tom Holland and his fourth “Spider-Man” film, that may be a good thing.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Tom Holland announced in a recent video interview with Extra that he is taking the next year off from acting following the strenuous production of his new Apple TV+ crime thriller “The Crowded Room.” The series stars Holland as Danny Sullivan, who is arrested in summer 1979 due to his involvement in a shooting at Rockefeller Center. The show is based on the real crimes of Billy Milligan, who was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. “It was a tough time, for sure,” Holland told Extra about the show’s production. “We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.”
