Viewers were left in tears this evening watching Alison Hammond's new ITV documentary Back To School as she explored instrumental black figures who have been hidden in Britain's history.
One poignant moment saw her visit Tottenham Hotspur's stadium with the great-nephew of Walter Tull, one of the first black professional football players in the UK.
Walter had signed for Spurs when he was 21 in 1909 and later moved to Northampton Town. However, he gave up his football career to enlist in the British Army for the First World War.
He became the first black British officer in World War I and had been recommended for the military cross. Tull suffered from shell shock when he returned but later died in March 1918 when he went back out to serve in
