Alec Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter case was allegedly dismissed prematurely due to a judge "misunderstanding" the evidence, according to a prosecutor.

The Hollywood actor's trial came to an abrupt halt in July when a New Mexico judge decided to dismiss a charge related to the tragic shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the Rust film set.The case was thrown out due to police and prosecutors' misconduct over withholding ammunition evidence from the defence, with the judge also confirming that charges cannot be refiled.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armourer on Rust, has since requested a new trial on similar grounds, claiming "extreme misconduct" by the prosecutor over withheld evidence.

Lead prosecutor Kari Morrissey, who is also handling the Gutierrez-Reed case, has asked the judge to deny Gutierrez-Reed's request.
