Aldi has announced it is slashing the price of more than 40 products. Items including coffee, tinned soups, fruit, salad and pet food will have their prices cut from Wednesday, January 17.

It comes just days after Aldi was named Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for 2023 by consumer group Which?. The consumer champion kept track of the cost of a basket of groceries at the UK's eight biggest supermarkets every day throughout the year, revealing the cheapest supermarket at the start of each month. Lidl, the second-cheapest shop for the year, beat its budget rival once in October, becoming the cheapest retailer that month.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “We’re starting 2024 as we ended 2023 – by being the UK’s lowest-priced supermarket, ensuring our customers can enjoy our great-quality products at the lowest-possible prices. “At a time when budgets are squeezed post-Christmas, this latest round of price cuts will help our shoppers make significant savings on their weekly food shop, with amazing prices to be had on a wide range of items.” Households have seen a rise in their food bills in recent years as inflation has driven up prices at all supermarkets.

However last month figures showed that food price inflation decelerated to 6.7% in December, the lowest level since June 2022 and down from 7.7% in November, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC)-NielsenIQ Shop Price Index.
