Aldi scraps plastic packaging from own-branded range of Easter eggs

Aldi has recently announced it is removing plastic packaging from all of its own-branded chocolate eggs for Easter this year.

The budget supermarket has scrapped the plastic casing that supports the chocolate eggs after redesigning the packaging on their own-branded range.They are one of nine seasonal lines that the German supermarket has made plastic-free ahead of Easter this year, which officially arrives on Sunday, April 17.

It means the supermarkets entire Easter range is now 100 per cent fully recyclable thanks to several other packaging changes.

The move has seen the grocer remove an estimated 24 tonnes of plastic from all stores across the UK, as they have removed plastic windows with cellulose film and switched plastic blister packs to card boxes.In addition, the supermarket will also add 10 new 100% plastic-free products to its seasonal confectionery range for 2022 – including the Popcorn Egg and Ice Cream Egg.Richard Gorman, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi UK, said: “We know that our customers are passionate about the environment, and these changes to our Easter range are a great example of how we are helping them eliminate unnecessary plastic. “We’re committed to playing our part to protect the environment and its changes like this that can make all the difference.”It is the latest move from the supermarket in their pledge to become a more sustainable brand, as they have pledged to reduce their amount of plastic packaging by 2025.The supermarket has committed to reducing their plastic usage by half by reducing, reusing and recycling 100 per cent of their packaging.As part of their pledge, the German retailer has also introduced deposit return schemes in a Scottish store to help recycle single use
