Airport issues statement after Ryanair pilot and co-pilot are killed in horror crash with lorries on M62

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has issued a heartbreaking statement after a pilot and co-pilot were killed in a major crash involving two lorries on the M62.

Captain Matt Greenhalgh, 28, and Senior First Officer Jamie Fernandes, 24, who both worked with airline Ryanair, lost their lives when a taxi they were travelling in was involved in the collision with two HGVs on the westbound carriageway at 5.30am on Thursday (July 11).

The two pilots Mr Greenhalgh, from Stockport, and Mr Fernandes, from Bolton, tragically died at the scene. They had been travelling to the airport in the early hours of the morning in a taxi when the crash occurred. It said: "Last week, we were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Captain Matt Greenhalgh and Senior First Officer Jamie Fernandes, who both worked here with Ryanair. "The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool John Lennon Airport are with their family, friends and colleagues at this time." The taxi driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital from the scene after the collision, which closed the M62 throughout the day amid police investigations.
