Airdrie got their Viaplay Cup group off to a flier with a comfortable win over Dumbarton at New Broomfield, but left it late.Goals from Nikolay Todorov and Lewis McGregor put polish on a performance that before their intervention very much looked like going to a penalty shoot-out for the extra point.As it was, Todorov swept the ball into the net in 85 minutes after Justin Devenny had hit the right post, and three minutes later Lewis McGregor found himself in space to smash the ball into the net.That was harsh on a Dumbarton side that more than held their own and created plenty of chances, but failed to take them at crucial times.Given how the first half went, it was incredible that the sides were on stalemate at the interval, but they couldn't be separated in the second period either, with far fewer chances.Dumbarton edged it on clear chances created, and Ross MacLean and James HIlton probably should have put the League Two side ahead, but squandered both, with one sent well over the bar and the other blocked by Diamonds keeper Josh Rae.The big turning point though was when Calum Gallagher thought he had put Airdrie ahead in 42 minutes, only to fall foul of an offside flag, when it looked like he had latched onto a pass-back from David Wilson.It was pretty much more of the same in the second half, with few chances created, though Airdrie's Charlie Telfer stung the keeper's palms with a fierce drive just before the hour-mark.
