Coming off a double strike, Hollywood was ready to party at the Golden Globes, the first major awards show following the lengthy work stoppage, as host Jo Koy reminded everyone from the stage.
Along with the partying, there was also some reflection on the key role writers play in any aspect of entertainment, including awards shows.
It came courtesy of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stars Daniel Kaluuya, Hailee Steinfeld and Shameik Moore in one of the best received comedy bits of the night as the trio presented the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture “This year, we were all reminded of the critical importance of writers to the creative process,” Steinfeld said, referring to the five-month-long WGA strike, which brought Hollywood to a standstill. “To demonstrate the importance of writers and writing, we asked that this segment be written not by writers but by studio executives,” Kaluuya added.
In their pursuit of a new contract that secures higher wages, better conditions and protections against AI, the WGA spent months negotiating with reps for the studios whose top executives were ultimately able to reach a deal with the writers.
