Aberdeen have made a move for St Johnstone keeper Dimitar Mitov. The Bulgarian international was Saints’ player of the year last season.

Mitov still has one year left on his McDiarmid Park contract but it contains a six-figure release clause – and now the Dons are looking to trigger that clause.

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin wants to bring in another keeper to fight it out with Ross Doohan after Kelle Roos left with his contract run down. The Dons had Brentford keeper Hakon Valdimarsson and Rangers reserve Robby McCrorie on their goalkeeping shortlist but Thelin likes the look of Mitov.

Saints only signed the 27-year-old from Cambridge United when former boss Steven MacLean brought him in last summer. Thelin – who arrived in Aberdeen over just the past 24 hours – has already brought in defender Gavin Molloy from Shelbourne and striker Peter Ambrose from Ujpest. The news comes after Duk’s agent hit out at the club over playing him out wide last season and rejecting transfer bids for the striker.
