Timothée Chalamet sings Dylan, and grumps just like him too in the new official trailer for James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown.
Charting the West Village era of the great Dylan’s rise to international fame, the clip hits all the high points of the near-mythological story: The arrival from Minnesota, the early romance (Suze Rotolo in real life, here called Sylvie Russo and played by Elle Fanning), the flirtation with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), the run-in with Newport Folkies angered over his gone electric move.
And we get to hear some clips, with Chalamet doing a decent Dylan, at first on the gentle “Girl From The North Country” and then on the rollicking “Like A Rolling Stone.” The synopsis: “New York, early 1960s.
Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music.
