It may have taken longer than they had liked, but Aberdeen have got their new manager in place for next season with Jimmy Thelin arriving in the Granite City from Elfsborg in early June. The 46-year-old Swede will become the 25th manager in Aberdeen's 121-year history, and only the second foreign coach to take on the role after the late Ebbe Skovdahl, who was a colourful figure in his eventful spell at Pittodrie between 1999 and 2003.
Although the current Aberdeen team under interim boss Peter Leven have failed to claim a top six spot in the Premiership, the incoming manager will have been pleased with the side's showing in last Saturday's epic Scottish Cup semi-final with Celtic, with an impressive fightback from the Reds in a 3-3 draw forcing penalties, where they ultimately fell short.Although he will be the first Swedish coach or manager to represent the club, Aberdeen have previously had a number of players from other Nordic nations who enjoyed successful stints in the north-east of Scotland.
Norwegian striker Arild Stavrum and Finish midfielder Markus Heikkinen continue to be held in high regard by many Dons fans.
More recently, former Iceland star Kari Arnason enjoyed two stints in the Granite City between 2011 and 2018, while Finland's Richard Jensen and Danish defender Stefan Gartenmann form part of the current Dons back line.
