Almost 6million people in the UK are now facing a Universal Credit cut in April after the number of claimants hit a new record.

New figures today show 5,911,783 people were claiming the six-in-one benefit in December, up more than 120,000 on the month before.

That is the highest number ever recorded and almost double the 3,012,736 claimants in early March 2020. It highlights the scale of the cut facing people if a £20-a-week Universal Credit boost ends as planned on April 12.

Boris Johnson has said he wants to concentrate on getting people into work rather than raising benefits. But in December 38% of claimants were already in a job.
