A young widow is hoping to work with transplant patients after retraining as a nurse following her husband's death. Louise Hughes married her partner of six years, Dave, in intensive care, less than two months before he passed away.

Shortly after meeting in Wigan, in 2012, Dave told Louise about his condition – he was born with transposition of the great arteries, where the two main blood vessels leaving the heart are back to front.

He even collapsed on one of their early dates and was taken to hospital by ambulance. In 2018, he had a heart transplant but he eventually died from complications 12 weeks later.

Before he passed away, organ transplant nurses made his journey as easy as possible, Louise told the Mirror.
