Homeowners in England could soon be able to build extra storeys and extensions without needing to ask their council for permission.
A major overhaul of planning laws was announced on Thursday (March 12) as part of government efforts to deliver 300,000 new homes a year.
Full details will be published in a white paper in the summer. However, it is expected that those who own detached homes will automatically be able to extend upwards by up to two storeys without obtaining planning permission.
The move would eliminate the need for homeowners to pay planning fees and allow work to be done quicker, without waiting months for a decision, provided the extension is within a certain size.
