John Dutton (Kevin Costner) or Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri), Colby wasn’t taken out by a hit man, but by a horse. “There’s always two reactions,” Richards told The Post about getting the news. “You have your personal reaction, which is the ‘who, what, when, where, why.’ In the beginning [his death] was a tough one to swallow.

I’ve been very connected to this character for a while. Once you get past that ocean of emotion, at the end of the day, so much of what we do as artists is really about the bigger picture.” Colby was killed by a horse while saving Carter (Finn Little). “It was very much a cowboy’s death.

So, this is a little bit more of a hero’s death.” Richards said that his final day on set ended up having a surprising twist. “The funny part about the last day of filming [is that] I was an emotional wreck driving into set … I was like ‘This is the last time I’ll put this hat on.’ I got there dealing with all this emotion, and then there’s this massive thunderstorm.”Because of the lightning, filming got delayed first an hour, then five hours.
