A woman who admitted murdering her sister in a brutal blade attack has been jailed for life with a minimum period of 18 years behind bars.

At a court appearance in May, Marie Metcalfe, 41, denied the murder of her older sibling Laura, 44, in Hartlepool in April. She was due to stand trial at Teesside Crown Court yesterday but changed her plea to guilty and was remanded in custody.

She returned to the dock today to receive her sentence for the murder, Teesside Live reports. Laura, who had lived in Scotland for 18 years before moving back to her Hartlepool hometown in 2022, was stabbed on a street on Friday, April 7.

She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition with cops saying she was suffering from "injuries caused by a bladed article."Cops erected a huge cordon in the street following the incident, with a large police presence in the area in the days that followed.
