A brave Ayrshire woman on the receiving end of a campaign of abusive messages from her ex partner has spoken out about the abuse in the hope of encouraging others to report crimes of a similar nature.
Rachel Gibbs, from Ayr, said she was “on edge” every time her phone pinged with a text in case it was another abusive text from her ex John Cuthbert, 41, who bombarded her with horrible messages for almost FIVE months.
Cuthbert, of Burgoyne Drive in Coylton, pled guilty at Ayr Sheriff Court to sending text messages and emails to Ms Gibbs that were “grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character”.Court documents state that between August 10, 2019 and January 1, 2020, Cuthbert repeatedly used “offensive, abusive and derogatory” comments towards Ms Gibbs.Rachel said the messages left her on edge and started to affect her confidence and self-esteem.She has now bravely spoken out against her former lover to highlight the crime and encourage others experiencing harassment to report it to the authorities.Rachel said: “Receiving abusive text messages is extremely upsetting and frightening.
You just don’t know what to expect next and you are on edge every time you hear a text coming in.“I am pleased the courts are taking this kind of cowardly behaviour seriously.“Over time, being called despicable names, no matter how unjustified they are, is demeaning.“It started to affect my self-esteem and I really felt he was trying to destroy my entire life.
