Woman dies from smoke poisoning after cooking chips with the wrong oil

A 74-year-old woman died from smoke poisoning after she accidentally cooked with lubricant instead of cooking oil, an inquest heard.

Tragic Carol Oldfield put 3-In-One oil on her chips and turned on the hob in the kitchen at her home in Ripley, Derbyshire. The retired machinist then went into another room and fell asleep for two hours.

When she woke up, her house was full of white smoke which she inhaled. Sadly she did not recover and died days later. A medical examination of her brain revealed that she had early signs of dementia.

Assistant coroner Emma Serrano led an inquest into her death at Derby Coroner’s Court, which was heard remotely. She revealed how Mrs Oldfield called Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service on March 6 this year just
