To plunge into the sparkling sea off Cornwall is just a normal, fun activity for most holidaymakers – but for Jennie Thornton it was nothing short of a miracle.
And as if her swim in the bracingly cool water wasn’t enough, to find herself surfing the waves and hiking the hills on her West Country summer trip made her feel born again.
Just four months earlier, 40-year-old Jennie’s life hung in the balance as she continued her fight against the deadly genetic disease that in 2013 had her planning an assisted suicide at a Dignitas clinic.
Cystic fibrosis, which kills half of all sufferers before they reach 40 and has bedevilled her since she was a baby, left her gravely ill in March this year.
